More Than a House: How Habitat for Humanity Builds Opportunities

Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta (Habitat) is helping create pathways to affordable homeownership for working families who may otherwise face barriers entering the housing market. Habitat’s approach goes beyond home construction, focusing on stability, education, and support that help households move forward. As one Habitat representative shared, “We always say we sell outcomes, we don’t sell houses.”

A Program Focused on Families

Habitat’s program is intentionally focused on families with children under 18, reflecting its commitment to creating a meaningful impact for future generations. Stable housing has been shown to support improved outcomes for children, and Habitat’s model is designed to help households establish a strong foundation for the future.

Habitat supports families who are working, saving, and doing many of the right things, but still face challenges entering the housing market. By emphasizing outcomes, the organization helps create opportunities that can positively shape the future of an entire household.

A Path to Homeownership

Families interested in the program begin by completing an eligibility quiz and meeting specific qualification criteria. From there, the process includes financial review, in-home interviews, and reference checks. This thorough approach helps ensure applicants are prepared for the responsibilities of homeownership and positioned for success.

Selected families enter the program in partnership with Habitat and complete 500 volunteer hours. Those hours may include supporting build activities, volunteering in a Habitat ReStore, participating in outreach opportunities and completing educational classes.

Together, these requirements equip participants with practical knowledge and tools that support successful homeownership.

Challenging Misconceptions

Habitat’s model also plays an important role in challenging misconceptions about affordable homeownership. The families served through the program are hardworking households. They are contributing members of the community who are working hard, saving consistently, and striving to create greater stability for their families. However, opportunities for homeownership can feel limited to many Southern Albertans in a changing housing market.

Homeowners contribute significant time to the program, prepare through education, and take on an affordable mortgage. Habitat also maintains an ongoing relationship with participants through regular reviews that help ensure continued affordability and support.

A Family Behind a Habitat Home – Chantelle’s Story

One of Habitat’s recent homeowners, Chantelle knows how quickly housing circumstances can change. As a single mother with two children, she has spent years navigating rental uncertainty and rising costs. Through Habitat, she found a pathway to greater stability.

While completing volunteer hours and watching her future home take shape, she and her children began to imagine something more permanent: consistency, belonging, and a place to truly call home.

Quality Homes Built to Last

Habitat homes are built with quality, durability, and homeowner success in mind. Habitat combines professional oversight, skilled trades, and dedicated volunteers to deliver homes that exceed building code standards. Energy-efficient features and durable construction materials help reduce long-term costs for homeowners while supporting sustainability. This approach helps ensure families have homes they are proud of that can grow with them over time.

Pride, Stability, and Community

At its core, Habitat’s work is about more than housing. It is about fostering pride in homeownership and helping families attain a stable future. In partnership with Qualico Communities, that work contributes to more inclusive, welcoming neighbourhoods for families in the greater Calgary region.

A safe, affordable home gives families the chance to put down roots, gain confidence, and build meaningful connections within their community. At Qualico Communities, we believe homeownership should be more accessible, as it is a milestone worth celebrating. Habitat supports this belief by empowering homeowners to become an integral part of the neighbourhood they reside in. Together, we work to support our region and each other for years to come.
