Holiday Season in Calgary
As the holiday season approaches, Calgary and its surrounding areas offer a variety of festive events and activities. From twinkling light displays and winter markets to concerts and family-friendly attractions, there is something for everyone to enjoy in and around the city. See the list we have compiled below for events that are sure to create lasting memories and spread the holiday cheer!
Activities
Step into a winter-wonderland and celebrate the holidays at Heritage Park! Once Upon a Christmas offers a mix of indoor and outdoor activities such as visits with Santa Claus, wagon rides, carolers, a holiday market, and holiday themed decorations.
Where: Heritage Park (1900 Heritage Drive SW, T2V 2X3)
When: Saturday & Sunday, Dec 14 – 15 & Dec 21 – 22 (10am – 4pm)
Cost: $15 – $20 per person
Head on down to the Olympic Plaza in Downtown Calgary to enjoy live music and watch ice-sculpting demonstrations, stilt walkers, and fire breathers all whilst under the bright lights and decorations.

When: Friday, Saturday, & Sunday, Dec 13 – 15 & Dec 20 – 22 (4pm – 9pm)
Cost: Free
For some festive indoor fun, visit the Telus Spark Science Centre where you can witness science experiments, watch The Muttcracker dog show, enjoy the dazzling light display, and grab some snacks and cozy winter drinks.

Performances
At Theatre Calgary you can sit back, relax, and observe a live performance of the classic holiday story, A Christmas Carol, complete with stunning sets and costumes for the whole family to enjoy.

Cost: Starting at $44 per ticket
Celebrate the holidays by watching talented professional dancers act out the enchanting holiday tale, The Nutcracker, to the sounds of a live orchestra. There are over 120 performers, intricate costumes, and amazing set designs that make for the perfect Christmas package.

Light Displays
Bundle up and walk through the Confederation Park Golf Course to witness the magic of the holidays through their variety of light displays.

When: Dec 12 – Jan 8 (5:30pm – 12:00am)
Cost: Free
In Airdrie, you can explore the festival of lights, purchase warm drinks and snacks to keep you snug, and peruse the gift shop. Children are invited to ride the miniature trains chugging through the park and have a visit with Santa Claus as well.

Cost: Free (Donations Welcome)
You and your family can keep toasty this winter by driving through the lanes of illuminated trees at Spruce Meadows. If you’d like to venture outside, there are lights strung amongst the buildings, stands scattered throughout the grounds displaying goods from local vendors, and treats available to purchase that you can enjoy around the warmth of the fire pit.

When: Dec 13 – 15, Dec 20 – 24, & Dec 27 – 29 (5pm – 11pm)
Cost: Free
The Calgary Zoo displays an array of twinkling lights throughout the trees, buildings, and pathways. Whilst in awe of the vibrant colors and creative designs, visitors can participate in activities such as ice skating and axe throwing. There are new themed areas and adventures to enjoy every year, and plenty of delicious treats available around the Zoo.

When: Dec 12 – Jan 5 (5pm – 9pm)
Cost: $18 – $25 per person
Out of Town Excursions
Take a ride on a train that has been transformed into a replica of the Polar Express this holiday season in Mossleigh, Alberta. The experience is set to the soundtrack of the film, with characters from the movie on board and a live reading of the story being told. Passengers that believe in the magic of the holidays will be given a bell to ring and hot chocolate to sip on during their experience.

Take a winter stroll through the gleaming light displays and sculptures in the Cascade of Time Garden. Whilst you are walking, listen to the wildlife of Banff National Park tell you a captivating holiday story.
